Estelle M. Halborg

IRON MOUNTAIN — Estelle M. Halborg, 80, of Iron Mountain, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at her home.

She was born Sept. 18, 1939, in Chassell, daughter of the late Eino and Esther (Maki) Kemppainen. Estelle graduated from Hancock High School in 1957. She attended Suomi College and obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Northern Michigan University in 1961.

Estelle married Thomas C. Halborg on Aug. 25, 1962, at St. Matthew’s Church in Hancock, and the couple shared 57 wonderful years together. She was employed with the Hancock Public School System as an educator for 25 years, retiring in 1996.

Estelle was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. She had a knack for interior design and always kept her home beautifully decorated and organized.

Estelle enjoyed traveling, reading and doing crossword puzzles. For many years, Estelle and Tom enjoyed spending their winters in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Estelle had high standards for herself and her family and was a very kind-hearted person. She had a deep love for her family, absolutely adored her grandchildren, and was deeply devoted to her husband and their marriage.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; two daughters, Carrie (Mike) Schaller of Midland and Julie (Andrew) Watkins of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Kate, Jack and Maggie Schaller, and Colin and Mya Watkins; a brother, Robert (Barb) Kemppainen of Auburn, Ala.; two sisters, Gloria (Ron) Case of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Carol (Don) Carli of Hancock; a sister-in-law, Ann Kemppainen; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Estelle was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Kemppainen.

Private family services will be held, with interment planned at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery in Troy.

It was evident in many ways that Estelle had a true love for babies, and with that in mind, the family would like to request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children in her memory tinyurl.com/estellehalborgmemorial.

Condolences to the family of Estelle Halborg may be expressed online at www.ernashfuneralhomes.com.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.
