Louise Hohol

Louise was born Sept. 4, 1929, in Niagara, to Anton and Exilda Amond. She was the youngest of 11 children. Louise graduated from Niagara High School in 1947 and married George H. Hohol on April 23, 1949. They were married 67 years before George’s passing in 2016.

All of her life, Louise was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara, where she had been a communion distributor, lector, music director of the Children’s Choir, Bible study leader, member of the St. Anthony Choir, and taught CCD. She also belonged to St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women, where she served as president for 12 years.

Louise was a natural leader and well-respected member of her community. In her younger years, she was a member of the National Honor Society and senior class president. She was a founding member of the Niagara Historical Society; in 1982, she was named Niagara’s Citizen of the Year, and in 2013 Niagara’s First Lady.

Louise had been employed for nine years in the Activity Department of Maryhill Manor nursing home in Niagara. She loved being with people, worked on funeral dinners, sang with the Smile Awhiles at nursing homes, belonged to Friends of Niagara Library and Karen’s Food Pantry. She also kept meticulous records as the historian for the Amond and Hohol families.

Louise’s greatest loves were God, her faith, her family and friends, and music. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her bright smile, loving and generous nature, and her caring attitude will be missed so very much by her family, friends, community, and other lives that she touched. Heaven has another angel.

She is survived by sons, Michael (Sharleen), Dennis (Kathy), Steven (Kim), Bruce (Paula), and Mark (Reneé); daughters, Christine (Sherman) Demeuse and Kathleen (John) Schoendorf; 11 grandchildren, Tammy (Scott) Gleason, Brian (Amy) Demeuse, Michelle Hohol, David (Kate) Hohol, Sarah (Ben) Steel, Scot Hohol, Kallie (Alex) Paul, Kristie Hohol, Erica (Adam) Lester, Sonja (Bryan) Mandalfino and Valerie Hohol; seven great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Makayla, Lucas, Grayson, Garrett, Brooklynn, and Natalie; sister-in-law Nancy Hohol; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; brothers, Jerry (Mae), Ernest (Lily), and Earl Amond; sisters, Ada (Eugene) Pilon, Anna (Leo) Hoes, Vina (Dale) Wartick, Margaret (Bill) Bates, Mary (Bob) Carlson, Claradean (Gordon) Thomas, and Gladys (Ernest) Bengston.

Visitation will be held Saturday, April 17, from 9 until 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Fr. Michael Lightner will officiate.

Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery immediately following the funeral, after which a lunch will be served at the St. Anthony church hall. Because of Covid, and for everyone’s safety, it is requested that masks be worn.

Per Louise’s request and because of Covid, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “George & Louise Hohol” scholarship fund through the Niagara Area Scholarship Foundation or to St. Anthony Catholic Church. For the scholarship fund, make checks payable to NASF and note the Hohol scholarship. If making a donation to the church, make the check payable to St. Anthony Catholic Church.
