Gladys M. Picard

NORWAY — Gladys M. Picard, 92, of Norway, formerly of Big Bay, Mich., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021, at Freeman Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kingsford.

She was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Sacred Heart, Minn., daughter of the late Oscar and Gina (Roise) Knutson. Gladys received her master’s degree in education from Northern University and was a special education teacher throughout the U.P. She later worked as a school teacher for Powell Township Schools until her retirement.

Survivors include one brother, Harlan (Jeanne) Knutson; one sister, Orpah Radford; four grandchildren, Shawna (Porter) Stephenson- MacGregor, Joshua Stephenson, Leticia Murk and Amanda Stephenson; six great-grandchildren one of which is Aiden Welker who was Gladys’ caretaker; and one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and by her beloved service dog and best friend, Lily.

In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma; and her husband, Doug Hamond; a great-granddaughter, Alexa Young; one sister, Arlene Hyatt; and by a very special person, Auntie June Picard.

In accordance with Gladys’ wishes, private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial checks can be made to the “Gladys Picard Memorial Fund” to go for My Best Friend Service Dogs, and mailed to Joan Zevitz, W5630 Summit Road, Norway, Mich., 49870.
