George P. Zaio

IRON MOUNTAIN — George P. Zaio, 92, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022 at Evergreen Meadows Assisted Living in Norway.

George was born April 11, 1930, in Iron Mountain, son of the late George J. and Mame (Miench) Zaio.

He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1948 and went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in business from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Following college, George enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956.

George married Lois Utter on June 27, 1964, at St. John’s Cathedral in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death in 1999. He was a financial advisor and investment manager for I.D.S. for over 30 years.

George was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved going to camp, hunting, and fishing, especially trout fishing. George enjoyed swimming, water skiing and spending time with family at their cottage. He was a Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs fan.      

George is survived by three sons, Michael (Lisa) Zaio of Iron Mountain, Mark Zaio of Hobe Sound, Fla. and Paul (Jeneen) Zaio of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; four grandchildren, Bethany, Alexis, Dominic and Drew Zaio; one great-grandson, Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Kilgore.

Private family services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Martyrs Church in Kingsford.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center, Northwoods Hospice and the CNA’s at Evergreen Meadows in Norway for the wonderful care given to George.
