IRON MOUNTAIN — Paul Martin Luhtanen, 50, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson in Iron Mountain.

Paul was born on Nov. 23, 1972, Thanksgiving Day, at the Crystal Falls Hospital, son of Joan (Hallberg) Luhtanen and the late Eric Luhtanen. 

Paul attended the West Iron County, and Forest Park schools, and graduated from the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District TMI program in May 1999.

He was employed by TRICO Industries, the recycling department, for 19 years. He said he was the “best worker.”

Paul participated in Special Olympics basketball, bowling, and bocce.

He was voted Inspirational Athlete at the Escanaba Basketball Tournament.

Paul was a Boy Scout with the Hiawatha Land Council, Troop 520. His troop was the Honor Guard at the opening of the Champion Mill in Quinnesec and greeted Governor Blanchard.

He enjoyed being a member of the Iron County 4-H Dog Obedience Club, with his golden cocker spaniel, Miss Buffy.

Over the years, Paul was a camper at Bay Cliff Health, Friends of the Forest, Nesbitt and Fortune Lake camps.

He enjoyed the many activities there, especially the community Fourth of July parade at Bay Cliff. And canteen.

He was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan.

Paul was a confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Iron River, and current member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Kingsford. He still remembered his parts from the Sunday School Christmas programs.

Paul is survived by his mother, Joan Luhtanen, the “Hughitt Street Gang” and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Signe and Eric Hallberg and Rachel Luhtanen. 

A visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Matthew Ruesch to officiate.

Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River in the spring.

Paul was a gentle soul with a beautiful smile.

His mom would like to thank all the wonderful folks who were kind and enriched Paul’s life. Too many to name. Paul had a good run. Please have some M&M’s and remember him.
