First deadline looms for health insurance marketplace coverage

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services is reminding residents that the deadline to purchase Health Insurance Marketplace coverage that would start Jan. 1 is less than a week away — Monday, Dec. 15.

While Michiganders can enroll until Jan. 15, coverage for plans selected after Dec. 15 will not take effect until Feb. 1, the MDIFS warned.

“To ensure that you and your family begin the New Year with high-quality, comprehensive health insurance, enroll in a Marketplace health plan by December 15,” DIFS Director Anita Fox said in a news release. “Even if you are satisfied with your current health plan, it pays to shop around to make sure you are getting the right coverage at the best price.”

Open enrollment for 2026 health insurance began Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 15.

Michiganders can shop for a health plan by going online to the Health Insurance Marketplace or by calling 800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325).

Free local enrollment help also is available by going to LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov.

During open enrollment for 2026 coverage, consumers are able to choose from 116 health plans on the Marketplace. For the overall individual market, which includes off-Marketplace plans, 191 plans are available.

To review available plans and rates, go to HealthCare.gov today and apply before Monday to buy coverage that starts Jan. 1, the DIFS stressed.

DIFS has also created an on-demand webinar designed to help consumers learn about signing up for a health plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace and provide resources to answer any questions. For more information about health insurance, go to Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance or call DIFS at 877-999-6442 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday.
