Michigan vets shut out of camp

EDITOR:

This letter was sent to state Rep. Beau LaFave, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin —

For the past five years our veterans group from the Oscar G. Johnson veterans hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan, has been taking part in Camp American Legion’s annual recovery week. The program treats those with service and non-service related physical or psychological conditions emotional, cultural and social family issues to help get back on the road to health.

Other treatment and counseling include families in need of “family reintegration” following a service member’s deployment to help families reconnect and bond; assisting survivor families of the fallen; rest; recuperation; PTSD counseling; TBI counseling; combat operational stress program counseling; and so much more. This program has been extremely successful and helpful to our group and to our veterans. I have enclosed a brochure for your review. Camp American Legion’s address is 8529 County Road D, Lake Tomahawk, WI 54539-9561, 715-277-2510.

Recently, Camp American Legion got a new director, Don Grundy, and he has mandated that no one outside the state of Wisconsin can attend. This goes against the past five years’ policies of allowing Michigan veteran residents to attend. Camp American Legion should be a borderless retreat for Wisconsin residents as well as Michigan.

Please contact Don Grundy at 715-277-2510 and discuss with him the significance of continuing this annual program to all Michigan veterans as his predecessor recognized for the past five years. The upcoming “recovery week” is scheduled for Aug. 28 through Sept. 3, so time is of the essence here.

The contact person for this retreat at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is Rebecca Jones, recovery group coordinator. She has been working for months to make this event happen. She can be reached at 906-774-3300, ext. 32541.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter and we look forward to working with you on this retreat.
