Plenty to do in the area

June 28, 2013 - Nikki Younk
Don’t let the recent hot and humid weather get you down. Why not embrace the summer by going out and enjoying local attractions and festivals?

For those who love the outdoors, I would recommend:

— Going on a waterfall tour. Florence County boasts the beautiful LaSalle Falls, which is located off of County Road C in the Homestead/Commonwealth area. In northern Marinette County, there are several falls worth visiting. Long Slide Falls and Smalley Falls are between Niagara and Pembine, Twelve Foot Falls and Eighteen Foot Falls are south of Dunbar, and Dave’s Falls is south of Amberg. For information about these falls and others in the Great Lakes area, visit

— River tubing. My personal favorite tubing route is the Sturgeon River from Loretto to Vulcan. Other popular sites are the Menominee River (just avoid Piers Gorge) and the “Oxbow” area of the Pine River (on County Road N between Aurora and Florence).

For those who love festivals and community events, I would recommend checking out the following:

— Art For All at Bay West on Saturday, June 29.

— The Iron County Museum’s Scandinavian/Log Cabin Day on Saturday, June 29.

— The Niagara Lions Club’s community picnic on Saturday, June 29.

— The Crystal Falls Lions Club’s Bass Festival from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7.

— The U.P. Championship Rodeo in Iron River from Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21.

Keep reading The Daily News for up-to-date information about these events and many, many others.
