Spring is just around the corner

January 29, 2014 - Linda Lobeck
It’s been a hard winter so far for animals, people, heating systems and vehicles. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t felt the pinch in their wallets from how much the extreme cold is costing them.

But what are you going to do? We live in an area where snow and cold is the reality in the winter. It’s doesn’t keep us home — we still have to get to work and live despite what challenges the weather brings us.

And we can’t go without heating our homes or putting gas in our cars no matter how difficult it is at times to deal with the fluctuating and increasing prices.

Growing up in Gladstone we had our share of cold temperatures each winter and being closer to the water — a lot more snow. We have pictures of the snow coming up to the picture window in the living room as well as higher than that when there was blowing and drifting. My Dad and the rest of us shoveled (by hand) and it got to be difficult some times as to where to put the snow.

Without a garage at that time, many nights my Dad would take the car for a drive to get it warmed up or plug it in to ensure it would start in the morning. Recent wind chills has made that a practice for many of us with older vehicles so we can be sure that they will start in 30-plus degrees below zero. Those temperatures are hard on vehicles and necessitate us ‘babysitting’ them and starting them up at regular intervals.

On a brighter note, it’s been lighter outside when I get going in the morning to come to work and when I leave it’s not dark out yet. We have also have been planning on what weeks we will be taking for vacation and I’m hoping we have summer by July and August — it’s something to look forward to.

Hopefully, the worst is over for the winter and as we like to say in the office, “Spring is just around the corner.”
