'Holaday' in Chicago

April 30, 2014 - Chris Tomassucci

The Tigers pulled out a one-run victory Tuesday night in Chicago against the White Sox. More impressive than keeping the hot Sox to three runs was how the Tigers got their go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

From Elias Sports Bureau at ESPN (emphasis mine):

The Tigers beat the White Sox Tuesday night on the strength of a Bryan Holaday bunt single in the top of the ninth inning. It was the first go-ahead RBI on a bunt (either a bunt single or a sacrifice) in the ninth inning or later for the Tigers since June 4, 2000 when Shane Halter did it in the twelfth inning in a game played at Wrigley Field.

As I was watching the game, I personally couldn’t have picked a worse Tiger to have at the plate in that situation. Holaday is the Tigers’ backup catcher and only played last night because Alex Avila was having back problems. Holaday really hasn’t looked good at the plate at all. What a pleasant surprise that was.

He’s got a couple RBIs today against the White Sox, too. Go Holaday.
