Florence prevails

Earns 3-1 victory at Pembine

PEMBINE, Wis. - Florence, fueled by a first-set comeback, downed Pembine 3-1 (27-25, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17) in Northern Lakes Conference volleyball Tuesday.

"I feel we played hard tonight, but with Florence's hard driving spikes we just could not return the ball back," Panthers coach Rickee Keeley said. "Both teams played really well."

Coach Trudy Rochon's Bobcats trailed 23-17 in the first set after sophomore Gabrielle Johnson stuffed a Florence shot. The Bobcats rallied behind four Shannon Drexler spikes.

With a 25-25 deadlock, Florence secured the opener with Aly Young and Lauren Joerns finding holes in the Pembine defense.

Drexler produced 17 kills on the night and Young added 13. Joerns registered 31 assists.

Pembine's Kayleigh Betka collected 10 kills.

Northern Lakes Conference regular season concludes Thursday with Florence (7-1 NLC) hosting Crandon and Pembine (3-5) entertaining Wabeno.

Florence's junior varsity defeated Pembine 25-17, 25-7, 25-16. Bobcats' Aubree Dumke, Gina Gehlhoff, Kaitlyn Springer and Tessa Merhalski served 100 percent.

Niagara whips STAA

MARINETTE, Wis. - Niagara, with Maryellen Wagener throwing down 12 kills, swept St. Thomas Aquinas Academy 25-14, 25-7, 25-14 in M&O Conference volleyball here Tuesday evening.

Wagener also collected seven digs in the win. Shelby Borchardt led Coach Carol St. Arnauld's Lady Badgers with 15 digs, and Shanna Nordell added 10 more. Both players also contributed six kills.

Kaitlyn Lundin collected eight more Niagara kills.

The Lady Badgers jayvees won 25-9, 25-12, 25-18. Niagara (4-4 M&O) play in a triangular with Wausaukee at Lena on Thursday.
