AUGUSTA, Ga. - Florence High School graduate Steve Marble always wanted to compete in a triathlon.
The 45-year-old decided on the Augusta (Ga.) Half Ironman, the world's largest. The 2011 Half Ironman attracted over 3,000 competitors.
After last year's triathlon (swim, bike, run), Marble began training for late September's 2012 event.
Florence High School graduate Steve Marble competed in the Augusta (Ga.) Half Ironman triathlon.
"When I started I couldn't swim more than 15 feet," said the 1986 Florence grad who resides in Augusta. "I hadn't rode a bike in many years, and I was only able to run two miles."
Marble has come a long way since his initial training days. swimming 1.2 miles in the Savannah River in 31 minutes, 56 seconds; bike riding 56 miles in 3:18:03, and running 13.1 miles in 2:00:41. His total time was 6:04:20 over 73 miles.
He is the son of Leslie and Carol Marble of Aurora. A sister, Liz Koller, lives in Kingsford.
