Florence, on a night where the school's top coaches and players were honored, spanked Phelps 54-28 in Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball.

"I was pretty proud of the guys," Florence Coach Tom Beck said. "They took care of business against a team that we should beat."

Beck hoped his team would respond with the Bobcat greats in attendance. Billy Counter, a Bobcats sharpshooter with 1,340 points from 1974 to 1977, served as "honorary coach."

"He's been looking forward to this day since they announced it," said Beck, who had Counter sit on the bench and talk to the team before the game. "It was pretty nice."

Jon Ouradnik netted 17 points and Austin Herman added 12 for the Bobcats, who built a 17-4 lead after the first quarter.

"From opening tap, they probably played as good as they can play, and they played pretty hard," Beck said.

Kyle Trudell speared 18 rebounds, with 14 coming in the first half.

"Trudell was tough on the board and Ouradnik shot well," Beck said.

Ouradnik also posted four steals while Phelps had 24 turnovers.

Ryan Cirese's 12 points paced Phelps, which also lost to Florence in early December.

The Bobcats (2-11 overall, 2-7 NLC) host Niagara on Monday.

Florence Athletic Booster Club sponsored the special program honoring the Bobcats coaches (more than 300 wins) and players (1,000 plus points).

In addition to Counter, other players attending the ceremony were Jaclynn Kriegl, DeAnna DeMuri, Chris Witynski, Dion Wolosyn, John Kriegl, Joe Kriegl and Josh Enders.
