IRON MOUNTAIN - District runner-up Kingsford along with Iron Mountain and Norway have qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association competitive cheer regionals.

The Flivvers, with a district-best third round score, finished second behind Division 3 host Houghton Lake.

"An amazing day for this team," said Coach Sara Pericolosi, her Flivvers posting a 706.64 score. "We had our highest all-around score, breaking the 700 mark for our first time this season."

This is only the second time that Kingsford has been a district runner-up, with the first in 2009 by a margin of nearly 40 points.

"The girls fought their way from fourth to second," said Pericolosi, noting the margin was less than five points overall.

Houghton Lake, 711.42; Kingsford, 706.64; Remus Chippewa Hills, 704.44, and Gladstone, 688.06, qualified for the regional. The Flivvers compiled a third-round score of 287.20.

"This team is determined to make history by becoming the first cheer team at our school to make it to an MHSAA state final, " Pericolosi said. "We're up against some great competitors next week, but we're ready for the challenge."

Kingsford competes at noon (Central time) Saturday in Rockford. The top 12 teams in Division 3 from the western half of the state will be participating with the top four moving onto the state finals in Grand Rapids.

In the Division 4 district at Munising, Iron Mountain placed third and Norway wound up fourth to reach the regional.

Munising, 713.86; Manistique, 701.50; Iron Mountain, 695.46, and Norway, 671.68, advanced to the regional Saturday at Muskegon Mona Shores. Start time is 5 p.m.
