Norway aiming for successful season

May 2, 2013
The Daily News

NORWAY - Norway's boys track and field team might be low on numbers, but the group holds high expectations.

"We have a fairly small group of guys, which is something I'd really like to change, but several of the guys we have are hoping for fairly successful seasons," Knights head coach Tim Keith said.

Norway's roster features three seniors in Steven Rabion, Grant Merrill and Michael Zygiel.

"They have put in four years of work and should really see it pay off this year," Keith noted. "Steven and Michael in the middle distance and distance races could have nice seasons. Grant is a thrower and popped off some really nice throws in the discus last season."

Keith is also banking on some significant contributions from his three juniors in Nick Weber (400), Ben Decremer (hurdles) and Pat Guffey (throws).

Two sophomore and five freshmen complete the Knights roster.

"The young newcomers will get the opportunity to try out a variety of events and see where they can be most successful," Keith said.

Norway's girls took a big hit in graduation with the loss of Megan Kangas, Nicole Vanderlin, Dani Gagne and Sara Boulden, who placed in every meet.

This year's team has no seniors.

Coach Carli Kelly is looking to junior Alexis Kallenbach to compete in four individual events including high jump, 200 and 400. Kallenbach got first in the 200 and second in the 400 at Tuesday's meet at Niagara.

"She picked up in high jump right where she left off last year at five feet," Adams said. "She will be our strong runner/jumper that we look to for points."

Junior Hannah Anderson will vault as well as contribute in relays and the mile run. Lydia Lebeau, another junior, will also vault as well as run the 800.

Juniors Michallea Siem and Amber Bourassa throw for the Knights.

Kelly is also looking for contributions from sophomore Brenda Cassanova.

"She did very well as a freshman and is already showing great times in her 400 and 800 runs," Kelly noted.
