Couldn’t be prouder of them

EDITOR:

Last week the 20 seniors in the Teen Wellness class at Florence High School presented a two day drunk driving simulation called Remember, Alcohol kills Someone Every Hour.

On Wednesday a student was removed from class every half hour by the Grim Reaper. Those students had their faces painted white and were to be "Walking Dead" for the rest of the day. In the afternoon students witnessed a car accident that killed 2 of their classmates and injured 2 others. The drunk driver was booked by police and sentenced to 15 years in jail. Thursday morning included the funerals of Aubree Dumke and Tessa Merhalski and a video of the events leading up to the accident and the trip to the hospital.

The entire Remember simulation was the work of FHS students. The students made contacts with the fire, rescue and police departments to arrange the accident scene and agency response.

They worked with Jacobs Funeral Home, Pastor Doug Johnson and Chris Gall to plan funerals. The students learned how to do special effects make-up from Mart Lundquist so that they could make their accident victims look real. They also secured a guest speaker who was personally affected by a drunk driving accident.

Finally the students contacted TV-6 News, The Iron Mountain Daily News and the Florence Mining News to invite them to the accident.

The Teen Wellness Class did an excellent job showing their classmates the tragedy that can result from the mistake of drunk driving.

I couldn't be prouder of them.
