EL PASO, Texas - An El Paso man - arrested in Escanaba, extradited to Texas, and charged in connection with his baby's death - was denied a bond reduction by an El Paso County judge this week.
Jeffrey Farrey, 22, an army specialist, was arrested Nov. 17 in Escanaba on a federal AWOL charge. Following his extradition to El Paso County, the body of his five-month-old son, Jackson, was found buried in a New Mexico desert. The father was charged with injury to a child by omission. Bond was set at $1.5 million.
Farrey's wife, Jenna Farrey, 20, was also arrested Nov. 17 in Escanaba for violating her probation terms on two child abandonment convictions in Texas. She was extradited to El Paso County on Tuesday and lodged in jail on the probation violation.
During Jeffrey Farrey's bond reduction hearing, Assistant District Attorney Penny Hamilton revealed that Jackson had been buried for about a month, the El Paso Times reported.
Hamilton also said Farrey had told his parents the child died and that he and his wife buried the baby in the desert in Otero County, according to the El Paso Times.
Hamilton also said Tuesday that the couple's other child, 19-month-old Blake Farrey, was placed in Michigan Child Protective Services because he was "grossly underweight."
Blake was with his parents when they were arrested in Escanaba on Nov. 17. He was placed under the care of local Child Protective Services.
Police were searching for the Farrey family after Jeffrey Farrey failed to show up for work at Fort Bliss Army Base and officials found a suicide note in their home.
Jeffrey Farrey's attorney, Joe Spencer, said during Tuesday's bond reduction hearing that his client is not a flight risk and was in Michigan to take Blake to family members in Illinois, stated the El Paso Times.
A request for bond reduction was denied by Magistrate Judge James Carter who said he will reconsider bond after the autopsy reveals the cause of death for Jackson Farrey. Results of the autopsy have not been released.
Jeffrey Farrey's preliminary examination is scheduled for Dec. 12.
