Ramon Carlson

NORWAY - Ramon John Carlson, 83, of Norway, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1930, in Norway, the son of the late Hilding and Luella (Zeni) Carlson.

Ramon graduated from Norway High School in 1948 as president of his class. After high school, he worked at the family business, Carlson's Bakery in Norway where he was a master baker and cake decorator.

On Feb. 4, 1950, he married Lucille Safstrom, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway where he was a lifelong member.

Ramon was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed shooting bow and arrow in his younger years and advanced into shooting skeet, trap, and sporting clays later in life. He was a member of the United Sportsman Club and the NRA for several years. He enjoyed working on his rifles and shotguns and having discussions with his friends on the art of handloading.

Ramon was a hunter and enjoyed training gun dogs, hunting grouse and woodcock locally, and made several trips to hunt pheasant in South Dakota. He also hunted deer locally and traveled to Wyoming where he successfully bagged a trophy elk.

In his later years, he became a member of the Prop Busters Club. He loved building and flying radio controlled model airplanes.

After retirement, Ramon and Lucille wintered in Naples, Fla. for many happy years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lucille; son, David (Fianc, Deborah Hribal) Carlson of Greenville, Wis.; daughter, Susan (Ken) Goodreau of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Joy (Russ) Kassin of Iron Mountain, Brian (Erica) Carlson of Milwaukee and Christopher and Erik Carlson of Appleton, Wis.; and five great-grandchildren, Carter, Lucas, Brayden and Noah Kassin, and Julia Carlson.

Ramon was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter, Michelle Mary Carlson.

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 12, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 13, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis presiding.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
