NORWAY - Harriett J. Bitters, 70, of L'Anse, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Aug. 22, 1943, in Escanaba, the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Muther) Bitters.
Harriet was a fighter. No matter how she felt, she always had a smile on her face and said,"I'm fine!" She loved all of her friends at Bayside and all the activities, especially bingo. Even when she didn't feel up to playing, Harriett would watch television from her room and talk to everyone who passed her door. She had pet names for them all.
Harriet is survived by her guardian, Peggy Vervisch and her family and friends who were always praying for Harriet, Emil "Junior" Bast, and many other friends (including the caregivers) at Bayside, as well as Shirley Younggren, Candy Kannianen, and all who took care of her at the rest home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Frank Bitters. Also her dear friend, Virginia Penokie, who went to be with the Lord one day earlier!
A memorial service for Harriet will be held on Thursday, May 1, at 2 p.m. Eastern time at Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington, followed by a light lunch.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 12:30 p.m. Central time at the Breitung Township Cemetery in Quinnesec.
