IRON MOUNTAIN - Barbara Isabel Papp, 89, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Aug. 2, 2014.
Barbara was born May 18, 1925, in Saugus, Mass., daughter of the late Harold and Isabel (Rollins) Platt. She was raised in Lynn, Mass., and entered the nurse cadet program during World War II. Barbara met her husband, Andrew Joseph Papp Sr., an army aviator, shortly after the war. They were married and she followed him around the country, while he was pursuing his medical degree. Massachusetts to Southern California, Minnesota, back to California, then Nevada, before settling in Iron Mountain.
Barbara worked at a number of high profile hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic and Scripps Memorial Hospital, and specialized in premature births where she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Award. Once Andrew started a full time practice, Barbara retired from nursing to raise her five children. The family relocated to Iron Mountain in 1976.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and performed volunteer work at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital and the VA Hospital. Barbara dedicated her life to her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Barbara is survived by her children, Barbara (Rod) Hirte of Aurora, Wis., Kathi (George) Walden, Reno, Nev., Charles (Christine) Papp of Iron Mountain, Joe (Mary) Papp, Bloomington, Ind. and Michael Papp of Iron Mountain; as well as dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew and her brother, Charles.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug.14, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
Barbara's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
