IRON MOUNTAIN — Veteran distance runner Drew Richmond of Iron Mountain won the 15K men’s title and Kingsford High School grad Heather Pugh “chicked” her boyfriend in taking women’s honors Saturday at the 40th annual Lake Antoine Classic.

Richmond, running in the age 40-49 division, ran the “pretty flat” course in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 37 seconds. Runner-up Aaron Lanning of Iron Mountain posted a 1:04.21.

“A lot of the fast guys didn’t show up today,” Richmond said. “The time was good. The day was perfect for it.”

Runners — 123 in the 15K, five-mile and two-mile events — found sunny but mild temperatures. However, recent rain showers left puddles on the 15K course through Fumee Lake Natural Area.

“The course here is always nice,” Richmond said. “They had a few more challenges out there with all the puddles. It happened at the beginning and then when you’re tired coming back you have to go through all the puddles. But I was able to keep the pace going.”

Pugh, a 2008 Kingsford High School graduate now managing a gym in Vail, Colo., cruised to the finish line in 1:06.58. She was followed by Brittany Richard of Garden in 1:10.16.

“It’s about where I thought I would be,” Pugh said of her time.

Pugh made it known to Scott Bellow, her boyfriend and competitor, that they wouldn’t be running together in the 15K. He finished in 1:36, which in today’s terminology means you’re being ‘chicked” if a woman beats a man in a race.

“I left him in the dust,” Pugh said. “I warned him I’m going to go and try to win. He gave me a kiss at the start line, and we took off.”

Pugh, who last year started ultra-distance running, navigated the water well enough.

“It was wet,” she said. “I was up to my knees in mud in some spots, puddles. But the course was beautiful, nice and green, lush.”

As for the hills?

“Nothing big, nothing compared to Colorado,” Pugh said.

Iron Mountain High School track & field teammates Michael Kulas and Lucas Cavalieri finished the five-mile run arm-in-arm with a time of 34:40. The chip time gave first-place to Kulas.

Iron Mountain’s Sarah Kulas, in the age 12-14 division, won the five-mile girls title in 40:09.

Iron Mountain’s 85-year-old Gene Smith was in a class of his own, completing the trek around Lake Antoine in 57:59.

Two-mile honors went to Iron Mountain’s Bella Pickett (16:02) in the girls division and Green Bay’s Blake Maxwell (11:35) in the boys.

The Lake Antoine Classic serves as a fund-raiser for Special Olympics.
