NORWAY — Norway completed a regular season sweep of West Iron County on Friday.

The Knights came back in the second half to beat the Wykons 49-42 in non-conference boys basketball.

Norway (8-3), which won a 51-50 thriller with WIC (5-5) earlier in the month, trailed 22-18 at halftime Friday.

“We had to run our offense and get a good shot,” Norway head coach Jeff Gallino said of an anemic first half. “We didn’t need to settle for a three.

“In the second half we did a very good job of that.”

Norway outscored WIC 31-20 in the second half.

After WIC deadlocked the game at 37 with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter, Norway reeled off eight straight points on field goals from Connor Ortman, Adam Faull and Kody Hendricks and a pair of Micah Wilson free throws.

A Caden Pellizzer triple narrowed the Norway lead to 45-42 in the final minutes. Josh Plante added a field goal, padding the margin to 47-42.

Norway missed the second half of two bonus free throw opportunities late in the game but the sophomore Hendricks came through with rebounds both times.

“Kody had another great game,” Gallino said. “Those rebounds off the free throws were huge.”

Ortman tallied 17 points and three steals to lead the Knights. Plante had 10 points with four assists. Faull also had four assists.

“The kids held their composure right at the end in pulling the ball out and not taking any bad shots,” Gallino said. “I told the kids I’m really proud of them.”

WIC, held to three points in the second quarter and seven in the fourth, had 19 turnovers. The Wykons converted two of three free throws while the Knights made nine of 17.

“We have to be more offensively consistent for a full game,” said WIC head coach Dan Schive.

Pellizzer led WIC with 14 points while Steven Nelson had 10 points with nine rebounds.

“I think Pellizzer is a great ballplayer,” Gallino said. “He’s tough. They’ve got some talent over there.”

West Iron County hosts Iron Mountain on Tuesday. Norway visits Stephenson on Friday.

Parker Lasater and Nathan Paulitch each scored 17 points as Norway’s junior varsity downed West Iron County 55-45. Jeffrey VanHolla added 11 points and Gagnon Bray had 10 for the Knights. WIC’s Justin Nelson scored 12 points and Elijah Turbessi had 11.
