Florence girls spill Goodman-Pembine

FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence turned things around in the second half and spilled Goodman-Pembine 61-36 in Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball Thursday.

The Bobcats (6-8, 5-5) struggled to a 25-21 lead at halftime.

Florence coach Dave Bauer cited defense and shooting for the first-half problems with GP (2-12, 2-8).

“We didn’t stop Kate Morrison,” said Bauer, noting the junior guard had 11 points in the first half. “Most of those were on lay-ups. We did not step in to stop her. We played a bit lazy at times by reaching and getting fouls that we didn’t need.”

The Patriots hit seven of 12 shots in the first half, who trailed 10-9 with 7:39 left.

“Morrison kept them in the game,” Bauer said.

Morrison finished with 19 points.

Cassie Larson’s 15 points and nine rebounds paced the Bobcats, followed by Jordyn Springer with 11 and Kathleen Selden with 10. Alicia Gehlhoff added nine points and Jenna Springer had eight with six rebounds.

“Cassie Larson had good night and worked hard,” Bauer said. “Jordyn Springer’s points didn’t come easy, either. We had almost all our girls score again tonight which was nice to see.”

Florence made halftime adjustments to trigger a 36-15 surge.

“We started playing up-beat basketball,” Bauer said. “We pushed it up the floor to open up the margin little by little. Pressuring the ball more factored into a much better second half.

“The girls played hard all night and it paid off.”

Florence grabbed 35 rebounds to 19 for GP. The Bobcats shot 43 percent from the floor.

“We had a great night for the Parents Night game,” Bauer said. “We are working hard and hope to finish strong the next few weeks.”

Kendra Milan scored 14 points to lead Florence past GP in the junior varsity game. Sydney Tomczak added 12 points and Madison Neuens had 10.

Florence travels to Wausaukee tonight. GP visits Elcho on Monday.
