Boys basketball: Ishpeming edges Kingsford, 55-52
KINGSFORD — Two days after upsetting previously unbeaten Iron Mountain, the Ishpeming boys basketball team escaped with a 55-52 non-conference win over Kingsford on Friday.
Hart Holmgren’s three-pointer with less than a minute to play put the Hematites up by one and the Flivvers couldn’t answer.
“It was just a battle,” said Kingsford coach Dan Olkkonen. “A great exciting game.”
Luke Terrian led the Flivvers with 25 points.
Holmgren, a 6-foot-5 Northern Michigan University recruit, played through foul trouble to finish with 20 points. The Hematites, who led 30-27 at halftime, also got 12 points from Darius Yohe.
“Luke Terrian did a phenomenal job scoring for us,” Olkkonen said, noting a 9-of-10 performance from the free throw line.
Both squads played rugged defense, Olkkonen said, though he regretted the Flivvers “leaving a few points on the floor” in the second and third quarters. Brad VanRemortel was Kingsford’s second-leading scorer with seven points.
“I’ve been impressed with how hard we’ve been able to play lately,” Olkkonen said. Despite some tough losses, he said, the Flivvers are keyed for a strong post-season showing.
Kingsford (8-10) wraps up its regular season Thursday at North Dickinson.
Kingsford JV won 53-49 and the freshmen rolled 61-23.
