Boys basketball: Wolves’ hot touch sinks Nordics

FELCH — Carney-Nadeau drained 17 three-point field goals and downed North Dickinson 75-42 in a Skyline Central Conference game Friday.

Preston Lauscher nailed six threes and finished with 23 points. Jacob Kleiman had five and scored 21 points.

“That was the story of the game,” Nordics coach Chris Mattson said. “They shot the lights out from outside. They shot the ball a lot better than we did.”

The Wolves (10-6) put this one away early, building a 23-5 lead in the first quarter and 40-12 at halftime.

“We got the shots we wanted to,” said Wolves coach Jacob Polfus. “They came out in that zone and we knew we were going to shoot three-pointers.

“Chris is usually straight man-to-man guy so it was good to see some zone. It’s almost tournament time and you’re going to see some zone here and there.”

Carney will host North Dickinson to open Class D district tournament play. Mattson would like to see better defense in the rematch.

“Some of them we had a hand in the face, especially early on,” Mattson said of the three-point barrage. “But as the game wore on our defense wasn’t as crisp. They got to loose balls and were a little scrappier.”

Matthew Bruette scored 12 points to lead the Nordics. Jason Kirschner added 15 for the Wolves.

“I thought we played good in spurts,” said Polfus, his Wolves outscored 19-16 in the third quarter when the Nordics played a 1-3-1. “First half defensively I thought we played really good. Third quarter was a little lackadaisical. I was happy with the way the kids kept competing.”

Defense was a concern after Bark River-Harris beat the Wolves earlier this week.

“It’s getting better,” Polfus said. “Practice the last two days we really focused on defense. I’m a little bit happier but we have room to grow. So, hopefully, we’ll continue to improve.”

The Wolves visit Munising on Monday and the Nordics travel to Republic-Michigamme on Tuesday.

North Dickinson won the junior varsity game.
