Forest Park girls gets by Rapid River

Girls Basketball

RAPID RIVER — Forest Park relied on a big second quarter to defeat Rapid River 55-43 in Skyline Central Conference girls basketball Tuesday night.

“We had very balanced scoring and did a nice job inside and outside,” said Lady Trojans coach Jackie Giuliani. “We were worried about their shooting but we a good job staying in their face.”

The Rockets shot 30 percent from the floor.

The Trojans (9-9, 5-4) led 10-9 after one quarter and outscored the Rockets 19-10 in the second period to take a 29-19 halftime lead. The Trojans stayed in control and sealed the win in the second half.

“The girls left it out there,” Rockets coach Mitch Hall said. “Kudos to Forest Park. We’d make some runs and they’d hit some buckets. We had too many turnovers in the first half. We shot ourselves in the foot.”

Rapid River committed 13 of its 15 turnovers in the first half.

Elizabeth Goodacre led the Rockets with 12 points, six steals and five rebounds. Shelby LaCosse chipped in with nine points and five rebounds and Kristin Goodacre added eight points and five rebounds.

Hall cited Jenna Rubick for some solid defense on Forest Park’s Mercedes Simmons, who made 7-of-18 shots for 14 points with 18 rebounds. Taylor Honkala led the Trojans with 16 points and Hannah Cross added 11 points.

Rapid River recorded 15 steals and shot 33 percent from the field. The Trojans had 17 turnovers and shot 44 percent.

“Coming down the stretch they controlled the ball well,” Hall said about the Trojans. “We fouled them with about four minutes to go and they didn’t leave much at the free throw line. I am glad we had a test coming into the last week before March Madness. We learned from this game and playing against their girls down low.”

The Trojans converted four of six free throws down the stretch.

“We made enough to stay ahead,” Giuliani said.

Rapid River’s junior varsity outlasted Forest Park 45-29 despite the Trojans playing the fourth quarter with four girls. They started the game with five players and one fouled out.

On Thursday, Rapid River travels to North Central and Forest Park hosts North Dickinson.
