IRON MOUNTAIN — Kingsford scored early and often in an 8-0 rout over Ashland on Saturday.

The Flivvers piled four girls in the first and second periods, invoking the mercy rule which ended the game after the second period.

Kingsford (14-6-1) scored its final three goals in the last minute of the game, all coming 21 seconds apart.

Kingsford’s offense has been ignited by an emphasis during practice in recent weeks on forechecking and puck movement in the offensive zone.

“We had a great forecheck tonight. We’ve been working the last couple weeks with our forwards trying to get our spacing down in the offensive zone to create more quality scoring chances,” Kingsford head coach Dennis Murvich said. “I think you started to see the results of that the last few games. Against Escanaba we had some beautiful goals, backdoor goals against Negaunee. Again we had some really nice passing in our offensive zone and had some beautiful goals.”

Daunte Fortner tallied six points in the win including two goals and four assists. Nick Murvich scored a hat trick and

had an assist in the win.

“They beat us really badly. They’re No. 1 line was scoring at will. We could do nothing to stop them,” Ashland head coach Darryl Penner said. “You have to play physical and use body contact. We decided not to, but skate around. And they’re really good players. You let really good players skate around, they score lots of goals.”

Smelling blood, Kingsford attacked for three goals 21 seconds apart during the final minute of the second period. All goals came from the same line. In the final minute, Fortner scored and had two assists while Murvich scored and had an assist. Lee Hedtke also scored.

Kingsford goaltender Trevor Anderson made eight saves in the win.
