Credit hard work for Lakeland University junior Miranda Jacobson earning Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

The former North Dickinson County School star from Felch had five straight double-doubles during the Muskies’ six-game winning streak.

Nordics athletic director and former girls basketball coach Mike Roell said Jacobson “is in the gym and weight room every morning of the summer.”

“Miranda has worked so hard at her game and it shows big time,” Roell said. “She has improved her ball handling and has gotten faster, quicker and stronger.”

The Muskies have qualified for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament with Jacobson, Rachel Stankevich (Goodman), Maddy Doll (Florence) and Abby Nylund (Crystal Falls) contributing.

“Miranda is a great kid that is showing what hard work and a passion for the game can do,” Roell said. “She has earned this recognition. I only hope more kids will follow her work ethic.”

Much to the disappointment of veteran speedskater Shani Davis, a former Marquette High School student with two gold medals, he was not chosen to be the Team USA flag-beater for the Opening Ceremony. A coin flip decided that four-time Olympic luger Erin Hamlin would carry the flag.

There’s eight Team USA nominees for flag-bearer. My Winter Olympic sources report that Iron River’s Nick Baumgartner, a three-time snowboardcross participant in the Winter Games, was not in consideration.

Nick has a podium finish in a World Cup race on this same South Korean site.

“This course is so sick,” Baumgartner tweeted Monday …

Wendy’s CEO/President Todd Penegor of Iron Mountain and pro playing partner Jonathan Byrd missed the cut in the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Pro-Am. The cut line was 19-under, with Penegor-Byrd at minus nine.

Byrd shot a two-under for the tournament, good for sharing 62nd …
