Lakeland careers end for Stankevich, Doll

MILWAUKEE – Lakeland University’s run at a second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament title was stonewalled by top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College.

WL ended the Muskies’ season 68-47 in the tournament semifinals Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Muskie’s bid to repeat as champs and make a second straight trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament ended on the road against the NACC’s regular season champion.

Lakeland (18-9) lost for just the second time in 11 games.

Rachel Stankevich (Goodman) scored a team-high 15 points and added seven rebounds. Maddy Doll (Florence) added nine points and eight rebounds.

The game was the final one for Doll and Stankevich, both four-year starters who finish their careers high in a number of categories in the Muskies record book.

Stankevich closes her career second in program history in steals (215), sixth in rebounds (747) and 11th in points scored (1,102). Doll is the team’s all-time leader in blocked shots (227) and 10th in rebounds with 589.

Bay College

ESCANABA — Norway High School graduates Teidra Fuson and Jordan Kraemer combined for 34 points in Bay College’s season finale Saturday.

Fuson scored a team-high 19 points with 10 rebounds in the 69-58 women’s basketball win over Gogebic Community College. Kramer had 15 points with 11 rebounds.

Bay was coming off a 71-63 win over the UW-Superior junior varsity. Kraemer scored a game-high 30 points with seven rebounds.

The Norse, led by former West Iron County and Iron Mountain coach Rae Drake Jr., finished with a 14-11 record in their inaugural season.

Michigan State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Behind a game-high 21 points from redshirt-sophomore guard Shay Colley, the Michigan State women’s basketball team stopped Purdue 82-68 at Mackey Arena on Saturday on the final day of the regular season.

Crystal Falls’ Lexi Gussert played five minutes and scored two points.

The Spartans (17-12 overall, 7-9 Big Ten) will be the No. 10 seed in the Big Ten tournament set for Wednesday through Sunday in Indianapolis.

MSU will face No.7-seeded Indiana in the second round on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

For the second straight season, Ohio State is the No. 1 seed in the tournament while Maryland is No. 2.

UW-Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Jessica Lindstrom and Allie LeClaire, the only two seniors for No. 22 Green Bay, combined for 37 points and the Phoenix coasted to an 88-45 win over Detroit Mercy on Sunday.

Lindstrom had 19 points and 14 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season and 39th of her career. LeClaire added 18 points and surpassed 1,400 for her career.

The seniors had seven points apiece in the first quarter when the Phoenix (26-3, 16-2 Horizon League), who won their fourth straight with their highest scoring game of the season, had runs of 7-0 and 11-0 en route to a 25-13 lead.
