Mountaineers to host wrestling regional

MHSAA D3

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain’s third straight MHSAA Division 3 district wrestling title resulted in another regional match with Gladstone.

The Mountaineers (8-8) will host the Mid-Peninsula Conference champion Braves at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Iron Mountain High School gym. The other regional semifinal pits Whitehall, ranked fourth in the state, against Manistee.

“Gladstone has a good bunch of kids and they’re well coached,” said Iron Mountain Coach Cory McLaren.

The Mountaineers knocked off rival Kingsford to win last week’s district. The Braves traveled to Boyne City for their district, beating Grayling and the host Ramblers.

“The kids wrestled very well,” said Braves coach Dan Seronko. “It was hard to say any one person really came through for us. They wrestled so well as a team and everyone contributed to our success.”

Gladstone has dominated Iron Mountain in the past two regional tournaments. The Braves reached the state quarterfinals in 2016.

In Saturday’s individual district, freshman Caleb Burklund (26-10 record at 171 pounds) of the Iron Mountain-Norway co-op advanced to the regional.

Burklund, competing in a bracket with 17 wrestlers, finished fourth with a 3-2 record. All three wins came by fall.

“Caleb wrestled well and was focused,” McLaren said. “He will be ready and up to the challenge in Kalkaska (for the individual regional).”

Unbeaten junior Adam Bruce (36-0 at 130) was one of three Braves to win individual district titles Saturday at Grayling. Jared Demeuse (40-3 at 215) and Brody Sanville (29-8 at 152) also triumphed.

Manistee had one district champion in Isaac Reynolds (30-8 at 125).

Whitehall, champion of the West Michigan Conference, tallied five district champions in Allen Powers (42-4 at 189), Tom Balakovitz (37-7 at 135), Trenton Blanchard (37-8 at 145), Derek McCollom (34-7 at 160) and Kayleb Venema (43-3 at 171).

Regional team champion moves on to the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on Friday, Feb. 23, for the state quarterfinals.
