No. 1 Mustangs girls sink Nordics

MUNISING — Munising’s calling card recently has been balanced scoring by its girls basketball team.

The Mustangs showed that off again Thursday night as six players scored at least eight points in Munising’s 68-43 victory over North Dickinson.

The No. 1-ranked team in the Upper Peninsula in Class D improved to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the Skyline Central Conference.

Senior Kianne Wendt led the Mustangs with 15 points and six rebounds, while junior Daryn Johnson added 14 points. In addition, senior Kelsea Ackerman scored 10, junior Michaela Werner nine and seniors Nykole Fitzgibbon and Marissa Ackerman eight apiece.

“We were a bit deeper, so I was able to shuttle people in and out,” Munising coach Matt Mattson said. “We wanted to keep the tempo in our favor.

“We kept our press on and I think that wore them down a bit. We did a good job on their quality guards.”

The Mustangs slowly built their lead, taking a 12-8 advantage after one quarter, 30-18 at halftime and 47-30 by the end of the third quarter.

JuliAnn Wickman led the Nordics (7-9, 3-4) with 20 points. They host North Central on Monday.

Munising, which also won the JV game 62-10, plays at Norway on Tuesday.
