Nordics boys fall to Republic, 54-51

REPUBLIC — River Shumate banked in a shot at the buzzer and Republic-Michigamme edged North Dickinson 54-51 in non-conference action Wednesday.

“We played decent defense and rebounded well,” said ND head coach Chris Mattson. “But we were too sloppy with the basketball and missed bunnies, and that cost us.”

After a 29-29 halftime deadlock where the Hawks hit a second-quarter buzzer-beater, North Dickinson (2-15) trailed by four entering the fourth period.

The Hawks held a seven-point lead with three minutes to go, according to Mattson.

“It looked bleak at the time,” Mattson said. “But we started trapping in the corners and they turned it over.”

The Nordics battled to a 51-51 tie with 23 seconds left. The Hawks had the last shot and hit the game-winner.

Jared Miller led the Nordics with 20 points and 10 of the team’s 27 rebounds. Matthew Bruette added 12 points.

Mattson figured his Nordics for at least eight unforced turnovers.

“We gave up too many turnovers just before half-court,” Mattson said. “It wasn’t like Republic put mega pressure on us.”

The Nordics were 7 of 16 on free throws.

“That was sub par,” Mattson said. “We have to do better.”

The Nordics visit Rapid River on Friday.

North Dickinson won the JV game in overtime.
