Soph leads Mid Pen girls past North Central

ST. NICHOLAS — Mid Peninsula girls’ basketball team received a boost from sophomore Camryn Croasdell and a swarming defense Thursday in a 41-27 win against visiting North Central on Seniors Night.

Croasdell scored a season-high 11 points and the Wolverines’ defense held Jets’ senior Natalie Dombrowski and junior Chloe Wells scoreless.

“The big thing is the girls had a lot of energy,” Mid Pen coach Bob Reichel said. “Defensively, they were phenomenal. Our defense was the key and Camryn stepped up offensively.

“We will get our points from Haley (Trudell) and Kennedy (Englund). We need other people to score. I couldn’t be happier for Camryn.”

Trudell and Englund each scored 13 points for the Wolverines, who trailed 9-7 after one quarter and took control of the game the rest of the way. Mid Pen shot 26 percent from the field and had 15 turnovers.

Bree Arsenault and Andie Arsenault each scored seven points for the Jets (8-11, 6-5), who hit only 17 perecent of their shots from the field and had 22 turnovers.

“We were more aggressive getting to the rim and getting to the free-throw line,” Reichel said. “We were a completely different team than (Wednesday night’s 64-39 loss) against Stephenson.”

North Central won the JV game 52-37.

Mid Pen (9-11) will get a first-round district bye at Big Bay and play Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the Rapid River-Munising winner. North Central will host North Dickinson Wednesday at 7 p.m. in district play.
