Trojans handle Bobcats

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park snapped a three-game losing streak Monday by beating Florence 62-41 in non-conference girls basketball at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.

The Lady Trojans (8-9), with three players scoring in double figures, built a 31-18 halftime lead,

“We shared the ball real well with our inside and outside game working,” said FP Coach Jackie Giuliani. “That created good outside shooting and rebounding.”

Taylor Honkala paced the Trojans with 15 points and five assists. Mercedes Simmons had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Hannah Cross chipped in 11 points.

“We played everybody which was nice,” said Giuliani, noting Claudia Nocerini returned after going through concussion protocol.

Jenna Springer’s 11 points led Florence (7-11). Cassie Larson and Savannah Vassar each added nine.

“We struggled with the press,” said Florence Coach Dave Bauer. “Offensively, we looked good at times but not all the time and that was the difference in the game.

“I’m not sure they were the better team out there tonight. We just keep shooting our selves in the foot. If we would have run the offense and boxed out all night, it would have been a different outcome. But they did what they had to and that’s why they won the ball game.”

Forest Park visits Rapid River tonight and Florence hosts Lena on Thursday. The Bobcats visit Lena on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in a WIAA D5 regional.

Faith Neuens’ 10 points led Florence’s junior varsity past Forest Park 34-22.
