Girls Basketball: Defense sends Wykons into district final

IRON RIVER — West Iron County fed the inside game en route to a 61-42 win in a Class C District 94 semifinal against Ironwood on Wednesday.

Eden Golliher’s 23 points and Emily Nelson’s 16 points down low paced the Wykons. The inside attack was so successful the Wykons built and kept their lead without making a single 3-pointer.

The Wykons (17-4) play at Iron Mountain against the Mountaineers for the district title at 6 p.m. Friday.

“I thought our girls executed our gameplan very well. We wanted to pressure their ball-handlers and not let them get comfortable setting up their offense,” West Iron head coach Eric Shamion said. “I don’t think Ironwood was able to get into a rhythm at all on offense.

“Ironwood didn’t have an answer for our two big girls in the paint, Golliher and Nelson,” Shamion added. “They were able to really establish their presence on the inside. They both played very well and passed the ball really well to each other.”

West Iron’s active man defense disrupted Ironwood’s passing lanes throughout the night, Shamion said.

“(Anna) Malmquist, (Colbi) Laturi, (Riley) Stine and (Katerina) Serbentas really played well on the defensive end,” Shamion said. “Just denied the passing lanes, kept the girls in front of them all the time. Just played basically in their pocket all night.”

Shamion said Friday’s matchup against Iron Mountain will be challenging. The Wykons won the lone regular season matchup against the Mountaineers on Dec. 5.

“Iron Mountain has been playing very well towards the end of the season,” Shamion said. “They’re going to be a challenge for us. It’s going to be a fun game on Friday night.”
