KINGSFORD — There’s been about three weeks of practice and an indoor meet but results have been favorable for the Kingsford High School track and field program.

“So far I like what I am seeing,” said Flivvers girls coach Lisa Harry. “The girls are working hard and showing a lot of promise.”

Thirty-one girls reported for the team. The number of boys is 33.

‘We are off to a good start,” said Flivvers boys coach Doug Roberts.

Kingsford’s girls return seven letter-winners that contributed to a third-place finish in the 2017 UP Finals.

“I am very excited to build upon our experience and success, as well as working in some of the newcomers we have,” Harry said. “We will definitely have more depth to our team this year.”

Leading the way is Olivia Allen, who broke three school records last season in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. The junior was the UP champ in the 200 and 400, along with a second in the 100. She was also part of the UP champion 1600 relay with returning team members Sarah Roell, Kendra Nora and Peyton Johnson.

“Whenever you have one of the premier sprinters in the UP you have a chance to do something special as a team,” Harry said of Allen. “We also have great senior leadership and respectable talent in their own right in Kendra Nora, Renee Roberts and Sarah Roell.

“Our expectations are high and we are looking to improve on last season’s success.”

Peyton Johnson is a very strong, versatile, mid-distance runner, according to Harry.

“Kendra and Sarah are two experienced sprinters, long jump, high jump and relay girls,” Harry said. “Peyton adds much depth to our team as she is able to run short or long distances.”

Rylee Palmer is back in the field events. The Flivvers have Renee Roberts and Jessie Yu after doing very well in hurdles last year.

“Rylee had a lot of success in the discus and pole vault,” Harry said. “We are excited to have her back.

“Renee is another one of our experienced long jumpers. They all bring strength, leadership and a great work ethic to the team.”

The Flivver girls, competing shorthanded without Nora and Johnson, finished “very well” in last week’s indoor meet at Eagle River, Wis. Allen won the 200 (28.01) and long jump (14-3).

“A few of our younger runners had some success which was encouraging,” said Harry, her Flivvers third behind Crivitz and host Northland Pines.

Sophomore Lily Menghini won the 3200 (14:16.03) and took second in the 1600. Freshman Melanie Wenzel finished third in the 800 and was a member of the winning 1600 relay.

Harry also noted freshman Josie Scott placing fifth in the 55-meter dash; Emma Allen running in the 3200 and 1600 relays that placed first and second, respectively; and sophomore Ali Doolittle placing third in long jump and second in 3200 relay.

“We have an outstanding core group of girls and I am very excited to see what we can do this year,” Harry said. “With greater numbers we should be able to add more volume to events.

“Our goal is to better our third-place finish at the UP Finals a season ago.”

Kingsford brought 23 boys to the Eagle River meet.

“We treated it like a practice,” Roberts said. “I felt the kids competed hard in the meet and we took third.”

Trevor Povolo ran to runner-up honors in the 55 and 200-meter dashes. Matt Swanson was third in the 55 hurdles. The 1600 relay claimed first in 3:59.18.

Kingsford returns two UP medalists in Liam Gayan, fourth in discus and fifth in shot; and Brad VanRemortel, fifth in 110 hurdles and second in 300 hurdles.

“We should compete well in the sprint relays, hurdles and throwing events this season,” Roberts said.

The Flivver head coaches are assisted by Bryan Johnson along with volunteers Becky Cecconi, Steve Lehman and Aaron Lanning.

Kingsford’s next meet is Tuesday, April 17, in the Superior Dome.
