Kingsford players contribute to Midget hockey title

Kingsford’s Daunte Fortner, Nick Murvich and Max Curtis helped Team Copper Country win the state Midget 18-under AA Tier 2 tournament.

MARQUETTE — After outscoring its three opponents 29-2 in pool play on Friday and Saturday, Team Copper Country breezed through the semifinals and championship game of the state Midget 18-under AA Tier 2 tournament at Lakeview Arena on Sunday.

Team Copper Country downed the Oakland Junior Grizzlies 4-1 in the semifinals Sunday morning before dispatching the Detroit-area Michigan Ice Hawks 5-0 that afternoon.

The Ice Hawks were the only other team to reach the semifinal round with an unblemished record after winning Pool A. Team CC was 3-0 in Pool B on Friday and Saturday.

Kingsford’s Daunte Fortner, Nick Murvich and Max Curtis play for Team CC, which consists mostly of players from the Houghton, Hancock and Calumet high school programs.

The team played before and after the high school season, which lasts from November through early March.
