IRON MOUNTAIN — There’s no getting around the fact that Iron Mountain girls soccer will be strong on the pitch this spring.

“My outlook on the season is to coach one of the strongest lineups that Iron Mountain High School has ever had,” said new Mountaineer soccer Steve Hodgins.

His enthusiasm is sparked by the return of top goal-scorers in Riley Poupore, Brianna Hoffman, Hanna Ellis and Reagan Lundholm. Poupore set a school record last season with 19 goals.

Poupore has 34 goals over the past two seasons and Hoffman has 21. Both players earned All-UP Soccer Conference first-team honors last season

Starting goalkeeper Lauren Lesky is back with “some very strong midfield and defensive players in Marissa Schilling, Bethany Fehr, Mia Broullire-Formolo and Grace Plante, according to Hodgins.

Other returning veteran players are Katelyn Charette and Makenna Dabb.

New to the team from the junior varsity program are Clara Irwin and Macy McCormick. Freshmen this year are Chloe Bianco, Arianna Morel, Olivia Stanchina, Leah Larsen and Cadeanace Lindsey.

Faith Goetteman, a junior from Norway, is rehabbing a knee surgery and will start season on the junior varsity.

Plante, Goetteman, Lindsey and Stanchina will represent Norway in the co-op with Iron Mountain.

“Having the ability to do the Norway co-op is a wonderful benefit as they bring to the team many talented girls,” Hodgins said. “Olivia will be a player to keep your eye on.”

Hodgins, an assistant last year, took over the girls program when Zack Frorenza left.

“This team has been coached well in the past and has worked very very hard in the gym (since March 12) to get the season started with a winning, aggressive attitude,” Hodgins said.

Hodgins said “keys to this season are to find the right balance of attack and defense, being creative to make goal scoring chances and when we get goal-scoring chances to be ruthless and capitalize on them.”

Iron Mountain graduated all-league first-teamer Hailey Ellis.

Hodgins isn’t optimistic of the Mountaineers playing Marinette on Friday or Monday. However, an April 26 match at Three Lakes, Wis., may go on as scheduled.

“We want to play a fun, aggressive style of soccer,” said Hodgins, assisted by Molly Uhazie and Dave Hodgins. “The girls want to score goals, win games, beat their rivals, and win conference and I want to give them the best opportunity to do so.”
