Memorable season opener with Niagara at Whistling Straits

High School Golf

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Niagara High School’s golf season got under way Thursday at none other than Whistling Straits, site of major professional tournaments over the years.

The Badgers and the other M&O Conference schools played their first nine-hole league match on the front nine.

“It was a great day to be out on the course for the first time,” said Niagara Coach Nicole Anderson. “With that being said, the kids all had their ups and downs. However, they all enjoyed playing in such a magnificent venue.”

Josh Goudreau led the Badgers with a 74, followed by Jon Phillips 91, Brooke Schwedersky 96 and Julia Brown 103.

Coleman, 187, took team honors, followed by Crivitz, 215; STAA, 281; Wausaukee, 314; and Niagara, 364. Shane Butler of Crivitz and Casey Casoer of Coleman shared medalist with a 41.

To make this year more memorable, the teams lunched in the “Champions” locker room.

“The golfers were invited to look around at the different memorabilia in each room from the different PGA events that were played at The Straits,” Anderson said. “They were able to sit at the lockers that Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy each used during their events.

“So, even though some of my golfers were disappointed with their scores, they left with fond memories of the day.”
