Soccer: IM splits weekend matches

WRIGHTSTOWN, Wis. — Iron Mountain split high school girls soccer games Saturday.

The Mountaineers, with Riley Poupore scoring a hat trick for the second straight day, came from behind to beat Neenah Saint Mary Central 3-1. The junior also had three goals Friday when Iron Mountain blanked Three Lakes 6-0 in the season-opener.

Iron Mountain bowed to Wrightstown 1-0 in the other game Saturday.

“Wrightstown is a highly-ranked school coached by Iron Mountain High School graduate Dustin Harry,” said Mountaineers coach Steve Hodgins.

In the win over Saint Mary, Bri Hoffman assisted on Poupore’s first goal shortly after halftime to tie the score at 1-1.

“Soon after Riley broke loose from defenders to net two more goals,” Hodgins said.

Iron Mountain and Wrightstown played to a scoreless first half.

“In the second game of a back to back we ran into a very good team who moved the ball well,” Hodgins said of the Tigers. “We fought hard in the first half.”

Wrightstown scored in the second half off a foul call leading to a direct kick.

“We did not clear out of danger fast enough and Wrightstown kicked it in from close range,” Hodgins said.

The Mountaineers (2-1) begin UP Soccer Conference play this week, meeting Kingsford on Tuesday and Houghton on Thursday at Commemorative Field.

“Whole team effort is what got us our win and a close result to a great team,” Hodgins said. “I’m proud to coach this team. They fight and work from whistle to whistle.”
