Tennis: Mountaineers retool, wait for snow to clear

IRON MOUNTAIN — What are the prospects for Iron Mountain High School boys tennis this spring?

That question would be best answered with warmer weather and a place to hit tennis balls outside of the gym.

“We’re looking forward to getting out of the gym and outside to hit,” said Mountaineers coach Anthony Tatangelo. “If the weather holds the way it’s predicted we should be on a couple of the courts by next week.”

The Mountaineers are scheduled to face Ishpeming on Monday and Westwood on Tuesday, both at Amos Marston Eastside Courts.

“The boys have been putting in their time working on drills and strokes in the gym but the balls are not going to bounce like it is outside,” Tatangelo said.

Iron Mountain graduated the UP Division 2 Player of Year in Tysen Wadge along with the All-UP doubles tandem of Carson Wonders and Trent Juul.

“We lost a few seniors from last year and have only one senior this year (in Ben Diercks),” said Tatangelo. “We have a fairly young team with over half being freshman and sophomores with a very diverse amount of experience.

“I am impressed with the leadership and mentorship of my veteran players toward others on the team.”

Diercks along with juniors Shane Brooks, Dakota Galeazzi, Kurtis Reath and Joey Bogaudo; and sophomores Ryan Hakamaki and Michael Colavecchi played last season.

“I have figured out who my single and double players are but haven’t been able to place all flights yet as we haven’t been on a real court yet,” Tatangelo said. “But I have a good idea where everyone will be.”

Tatangelo coached the IMHS girls program in the fall.

“I am glad to be coaching the boys team this year,” he said. “I had a lot of fun coaching the girls last fall.”

This year’s roster:

SENIOR — Ben Diercks

JUNIORS — Shane Brooks, Dakota Galeazzi, Joey Bogaudo, Kurtis Reath

SOPHOMORES — Ryan Hakamaki, Michael Colavecchi, Gio Colavecchi

FRESHMEN — Aiden VanPembrook, Blake Julian, Max Fornetti,

Dominic Shinderle
