Tennis: Seniors to lead Wykons

IRON RIVER — A strong senior class is expected to carry West Iron County boys tennis this spring.

“We have a strong group of seniors on this team that have been playing varsity for three years,” said Wykons coach Joe Serbentas. “The weather hasn’t cooperated with us this spring, but with the experience we have on this team consistency will come quickly.”

All-UP singles Neil Tomasoski and All-UP doubles Brandon Henschel-Kevin Ballinger are among six senior letter-winners. The others are Steven Nelson, Tyler McCarthy and Christian Benson.

McCarthy, Nelson and junior James Swanson received honorable mention All-UP.

“The freshman class that came out to play this year was a huge addition to our team,” said Serbentas, who has 12 freshmen on the roster. “Most of the young guys were out quite a bit this summer and should mix right in with the more experienced upperclassmen to provide us with a well-rounded and deep team.”

West Iron graduated Dante Thurston (No. 2 doubles), Seth Miatech (No. 3 doubles) and AJ Weisnicht (No. 4 singles).

After Friday’s matches in Marinette, the Wykons are scheduled to visit Escanaba on Tuesday.

“Expectations are high,” said Serbentas, assisted by John Spelgatti and Anders Ahlberg.

Team managers are Natalie Tomasoski and Katarina Serbentas.
