Flivvs control Esky Invite track meet

ESCANABA — Kingsford dominated a quad track meet Tuesday with the host Eskymos, Westwood and Ishpeming.

The Flivver boys, 84, downed Escanaba 68, Westwood 59 and Ishpeming 45.

“Brad VanRemortel had a great night,” said Kingsford coach Doug Roberts, noting the senior’s sweep of the hurdle events and running the third leg on the winning 800-meter relay.

Seniors Liam Gayan and Eddie Plumley threw personal bests in the shot and disk. Gayan was first in the discus (125) and shot (42-7). Plumley hit 40-5 in the shot and 105-7 in the discus.

Senior Preston Strong won the 200, took second in the long jump and 400, and the second leg of the 1600 relay. Mike Halley won the open 800.

“Overall, we had a great night against good competition,” Roberts said. “It’s just great to get outside and enjoy some nice weather to compete in.”

In the girls meet, Kingsford, 95, defeated Ishpeming 59, Escanaba 50 and Westwood 47.

“The girls competed hard,” said Flivvers coach Lisa Harry. “It was overall nice but windy, and they did a great job fighting through the wind on the back stretch. I was extremely happy with the effort.”

The coach cited Olivia Allen for dominating the 100, 200 and 400. Peyton Johnson made her season debut with firsts in 3200 relay, 800 and 1600 relay.

“Olivia looked strong in her events,” Harry said. “Peyton got off to a solid start.”

Rylee Palmer won the discus.

The Flivvers won three of four relays.

“Our relays did a nice job executing the handoffs,” Harry said. “Those can be extra challenging in the wind. We have some young girls with not much experience and they did a great job.

“Sarah Roell, Kendra Nora and Renee Roberts are three seniors with a ton of experience in many events and relays, and they were solid in all of their events.”

Roell won the high jump along with two firsts and a second in relays. Roberts had a relay first plus seconds in the 300 hurdles and shot put. Nora was part of two firsts and a second in the three relays.

“Overall, it was a great meet for us and I was very pleased the results,” Harry said.
