Carney ace plays WSGA round with Tony Romo

Golf

Carney’s Hunter Eichhorn played his qualifying round for this week’s Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play Championship with former Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo.

Eichhorn, admitting to some nerves playing with the NFL quarterback turned broadcaster, shot a 68 for the second-best qualifying score at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison.

“It was exciting,” Eichhorn told Rob Hernandez of wisconsin.golf. “It’s exciting to play with people like that to really push yourself through kind of pressure moments.”

The 19-year-old Eichhorn, 2018 Big East Conference freshman and player of the year at Marquette University, bowed out in the round of 16.

Romo, from Burlington, Wis., says Eichhorn has a bright future.

“You can tell why (he’s a rising star),” Romo said. “I think you might see him move on past Wisconsin at some point. He’s special.”
