UP tournament returns to Oak Crest Golf Course

Golf

NORWAY — The UP Ladies Golf Association Championships are returning to Oak Crest Golf Course for the first time in 13 years.

The 92nd annual tournament tees off this morning at 9 a.m. The opening group features past champions Becky Cecconi and Karen Plaisier along with Zoe Woodworth and Paxton Johnson.

The last of 14 groups will tee off this morning at 11:20 a.m. Low 16 scores from Saturday will determine championship flight and match play for the next three days.

In the 2005 UP tournament at Oak Crest, 115 golfers from 20 clubs participated. Fifty-six golfers will tee off today.

Iron River’s Jill Sabotta shot a one-under 73 for medalist in the 2005 qualifying round. She repeated as UP champion by outlasting Green Bay’s Kendra Anderson on the 21st hole.

Sabotta defeated Cecconi and Anderson downed Marie Iverson in the semifinals.

Sharon Laskowski was the lone Oak Crest golfer to reach the 2015 quarterfinals. She plays in the 9:50 a.m. foursome this morning with Julie Benzie, sister of Becky Cecconi; Lori Johnson; and Sally Osterberg, who caddied for Lisa Dionne in the 2015 UP tournament.

Advice from the champs: Escanaba’s Paxton Johnson and Hancock’s Payton Dube earned medalist honors this spring at UP high school tournaments this spring.

Both Cecconi and Plaisier advise the youngsters to just “play your game” in the UP ladies tournament.

“It’s all about hitting the shots that you’re comfortable with,” Cecconi said. “Stay focused because there’s lots of distractions.”

Johnson reached the semifinals of last year’s UP tournament in Marquette.

“Don’t worry about what’s going on around you,” Plaisier said. “There’s a lot of holes.”

Tough stretch: Tournament director Kevin Londo, director of golf and operations at Oak Crest, was reluctant to use the term “mini Amen Corner” to describe three tough holes at Oak Crest.

But holes 6, 7 and 8 — a par 3 sandwiched by par 5s — can make or break golfers.

“A golfer can make up some room on somebody else on those three holes because they are such good scoring opportunities,” said Londo, noting a golfer can catch up or extend the lead. “It’s a nice little conglomerate of holes right there.”

Another ace for Jan Hruska: UPLGA Championships participant Jan Hruska recently recorded her third career hole-in-one at Marquette Golf Club.

Hruska used a 7-iron to ace the 129-yard, 15th hole on the Greywalls course.

She plays today at 9:40 a.m. with Tammy DeBakker, Amy Johnson and Heidi Olson.

More golf: Oak Crest hosts the UP Golf Association Men’s Championships on Tuesday, Aug. 7, through Aug. 10. There’s also a UPGA junior tourney July 25.

Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain is the site of the UP senior ladies tourney on Monday, Aug. 6, and 2019 UPLGA Championships.
