Football: Florence beats Nordics

FLORENCE, Wis. — Unbeaten Florence found little to celebrate after beating North Dickinson 48-0 in a eight-player homecoming football game Friday at Landry Field.

Senior team co-captain Eric DeCremer, who ran for 18- and 65-yard touchdowns in the first half, suffered a broken leg late in the second quarter.

“Eric has been a good player for a long time,” said Florence head coach Kent Walstrom of the running back and linebacker. “He’s been such a leader. You can’t put a price on those guys.”

Kaden Schuls returned a fumble 20 yards for a first-quarter score. The Bobcats (6-0) rolled to a 28-0 halftime lead after Toby Wheeler threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Joe Walstrom.

“We played pretty good in the second half and Kaden had a real nice half,” Walstrom said.

Schuls ran 50 and 45 yards for scores and Joe Walstrom covered 50 for another.

Florence registered 460 yards total offense, with Wheeler completing 3 of 5 passes for 76 yards. The Bobcats gained 384 yards on the ground, with Walstrom going for 144 on 11 carries. Schuls had 99 yards on three carries. DeCremer had 98 on four and Wheeler had 42 on 11.

Wheeler posted a team-high 15 tackles from middle linebacker. Gary Liebergen added 13 tackles, Schuls (nine), DeCremer and Hunter Browning (seven each) and Walstrom, (five).

Florence’s Evan Beaster intercepted a pass.

North Dickinson had 168 yards total offense — 100 rushing and 68 passing. Defensive end Matthew Bruette made 10 tackles and Cameron Schultz recovered a fumble.

“We turned the ball over six times and they took advantage,” said Nordics head coach Mike Christian. “They had a very nice running game. Miss one tackle and away they go.”

North Dickinson hosts Forest Park and Florence faces once-beaten North Central in next Friday’s games.

“They’re quite the juggernaut,” Walstrom said of North Central. “It will be like playing the (Los Angeles) Rams.”
