Football: Kingsford falls flat in 35-0 loss

LOMIRA, Wis. — Defending state champion St. Mary’s Springs shut out Kingsford 35-0 in non-conference football Friday.

The Flivvers (0-2) managed just 84 yards total offense while the Ledgers (3-0) tallied 373.

With the game moved from Fond du Lac’s flooded Fruth Field to the artificial turf of Lomira High School, Springs scored 14 first-quarter points and kept that margin to the third quarter.

Springs produced another 14 points in the third quarter and the final touchdown in the fourth.

Quarterback Mitchell Waechter, on Springs’ first offensive play from scrimmage, hit 6-foot-4 Cade Christensen with a 57-yard scoring pass.

On the final play of the first quarter, Waechter ran 41 yards for a score.

Kingsford, which forced three Menasha fumbles in last week’s season-opening loss to Menasha, came up with two in the second quarter to thwart Springs.

Marcus Orlandoni, a 210-pound running back, blasted two yards for the Ledgers’ first score of the third quarter. The junior rushed for 120 yards on 18 carries in the game.

The Flivvers mishandled the following kick-off and the Ledgers reached the 14 before stalling. They came back with a Luke Vander Kooy pass interception that set up Jacob Hoch’s 18-yard touchdown run.

Cade Sabel’s seven-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.

Kingsford totaled 54 yards rushing and 35 passing. Jon Schmutzler led the Flivvers on the ground with 42 yards on nine attempts. Quarterback Tyler Kopp completed five of 10 passes. Waechter connected on 7 of 12 passes for 132 yards and rushed for 53.

Kingsford’s Luke Terrian (ankle), who started at quarterback and linebacker last week, did not play.

The Flivvers, hoping to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1979, meet Fond du Lac in their home opener Friday, Sept. 7.
