MANISTIQUE — For the third time in five weeks of the season, the Manistique Emeralds forfeited because of a lack of players.

Manistique was scheduled to play Westwood Friday in the new West PAC Conference.

Manistique athletic director Rob Ryan made the announcement Monday.

“We don’t want to cancel games, but we don’t have enough healthy players available to play,” Ryan said.

“We want to have 14 players available for games and we are hoping some players injured will be back healthy. And we are also considering jayvee team call ups.”

Ryan said it is the football program’s goal to play the final four scheduled games and will use this week to get players healthy and add to the varsity roster.

Ryan said they will make a determination on Monday to either continue playing the final four games or to cancel the season.

Manistique also canceled games against Gwinn on Aug. 30 and Negaunee on Sept. 14.

The Emeralds opened the season Aug. 24, in a 52-0 loss to Ishpeming.

Ryan said they finished their 41-0 home loss to West Iron County on Sept. 7 with 10 healthy players.

Manistique has four remaining games scheduled this season including two home and away, including at Norway’s Oct. 12 Homecoming game.
