FLORENCE, Wis. — Florence pounded Phelps before falling to Laona-Wabeno in the LadyCats’ Northern Lakes Conference volleyball opener Thursday.
The LadyCats beat the Knights 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-9) but lost to the Rebels 3-1 including 26-24 in the final set.
“We struggled with serving (against LW),” said Florence Coach Joan Canfield of a department that stood out in the opening match with Phelps. “We also haven’t settled in on players’ positions. We’re still trying to find that perfect fit so we can flow as a team. We’ll get there, it just isn’t happening yet.”
Jump-serving Bailey Apfel led Florence (7-3, 1-1) with four aces and nine kills; Sidnie Steber, four block kills; Karmen Anderson, 17 assists; and Cassie Larson, 34 serve receives.
In the Phelps’ match, southpaw Madison Neuens fired six ace serves in the first set. Karmen Anderson and Savannah Vassar closed the set with kills.
Apfel and Neuens served up aces in the second set with Phelps. Kendralee Milan had kills in the final points of the third set.
Trojans triumph
EBEN — Forest Park started strong and swept Superior Central 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) in Skyline Central Conference volleyball.
“After the long bus ride I was happy to see the girls play with a sense of urgency in the first set,” said FP Coach Ana Cornelia. “In the other two sets we had unforced errors that we couldn’t shake mentally. That made sets two and three harder for them, but thy were able to dig themselves out of the hole they dug.”
Mercedes Simmons’ 10 kills and Sydney Honkala’s 11 assists led the Lady Trojans (2-7-3, 1-1).
“I give them credit because they picked each other up and fought back during the tough times together as a team,” Cornelia said.
Forest Park hosts North Dickinson on Tuesday.
