Volleyball roundup: Nordics sweep Superior Central

FELCH — North Dickinson dominated the final two sets to sink Superior Central 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-12) in Skyline Central Conference volleyball Thursday.

The Nordics (4-3) showed little of the problems resulting in their early-season struggles.

“We’ve been very inconsistent, up and down,” Nordics coach Sandy Haustein said of the season. “One game we look really good and the next game is like we never touched a volleyball.”

In Tuesday’s loss to Stephenson, four Nordics served at 100 percent. But that was coupled with 24 hits into the net, according to Haustein.

“We’re not keeping the ball in play consistently,” Haustein said. “We’ve had leads this year. Then we get in a slump, lose our momentum and start hitting the ball out of bounds.”

The defense, like the final two sets Thursday, is “pretty good,” Haustein said. “But offensively we need to work more.”

A Samantha Borvan kill snapped a 16-16 tie in the first set Thursday with the Cougars. Borvan added another kill in an 8-3 surge.

A Skye Ledzian kill and consecutive aces for a 24-19 lead put away the Cougars.

“We didn’t talk in the first game,” Haustein said. “The back row needs to talk more about what’s open.”

Kylie Gustafson was on the service line for the final five points of the second set wrapped up by a Borvan kill.

“Overall, I was pretty happy with the last two games,” Haustein said. “They played pretty well.”

Trojans fall

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park dropped a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-23) decision to Munising in Skyline Central Conference volleyball Thursday.

Mercedes Simmons’ 18 kills led the Lady Trojans (6-13-3).

“Our team was right it in tonight,” said Forest Park head coach Ana Cornelia. “Munising has a good team with strong hitters across the board. We struggled with staying disciplined at the net and with our defensive transitioning.”

Forest Park visits North Central on Tuesday.

“We know what we need to work on as a team to improve our level of play,” Cornelia said. “We will move forward together.”

Caitlyn Bloomberg — 2 aces

Cassie Divine — 4 kills, 1 dig, 4 blocks

Destiny Ferrara — 2 digs

Kelsey Ragio — 3 kills, 3 digs

Laina Toivonen — 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 dig

Mercedes Simmons — 18 kills, 3 digs, 7 blocks

Sydney Honkala — 1 ace, 4 kills, 5 assists, 2 digs, 2 blocks

Norway beats Big Bay

NORWAY — Norway remained unbeaten in Skyline Central Conference volleyball by sweeping Big Bay de Noc 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-6) on Thursday.

The Knights will take a 6-0 record into next week’s match at Forest Park.

“Good performance all around,” Norway head coach Steve Andrews said. “The girls played at their level and didn’t revert to the competition. Both teams were still diving for balls regardless of the score.”

Patriots split matches

THREE LAKES, Wis. — Goodman-Pembine split a pair of Northern Lakes Conference volleyball matches Thursday.

The Patriots (3-7) defeated Phelps 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-11) and bowed to Three Lakes 3-0 (28-26, 25-10, 25-18).

GP plays Saturday in Gresham.
